ITALIAN WORKS
When I was in my twenties, I lived in Venice, and studied the mosaics, art history and culture of the Veneto. Since then, in my day dreams, I cross bridges, listen to footsteps fading in foggy campos, see light dancing on water, smell diesel, wake to bells and participate in an evening passeggiata. Subtle and evocative color, variations in light and shadow, the geometry and universal nature of pattern are embedded in my vocabulary of images.
I attempt to capture the elusive, the dream, and the fragment of memory. Secular and religious Italian Renaissance paintings, mosaics, decorative window grilles, brocade, layers and patina are sources; they are tangible links to a world in which people live illuminated by glass chandeliers in rooms above water.
I resonate with the palettes of Titian, Carpaccio and Giorgione. Invisible Cities by Italo Calvino is a favorite literary source.
My collages, ranging in size from 10 x 8 - 12 x 48, include photographs, printed transfers, hand painted papers, and digitally manipulated imagery. I frequently work on a series of pieces that are united by theme and materials. I am fascinated by color, pattern, distorted proportion, combining realism and illusion, and the juxtaposition of water within and around architecture.
