PATTERNS
This selection of Solarplate etchings is created from my photographs of patterns in Portugal and Italy. As a pattern enthusiast, I see pattern as both decorative and symbolic in every culture across the globe and throughout history. I find its geometry, infinite variation, elegance and spiritual importance moving and mesmerizing. My art has been inspired by Chinese lattice patterns, American quilt motifs, and Byzantine mosaics. Simplicity and complexity exist simultaneously in a composition where pattern is a central element. The ubiquitous presence of pattern is one reason why I feel gratitude to the artists and artisans who left their tessellated marks for everyone to appreciate.
These 10 x 8 prints are made from polymer etching plates that are sensitive to ultraviolet light. My original photographs are exposed o metal plates in a light box. After the plate is made, I use traditional etching methods to create an edition varié of no more than twenty prints in which each print is one of a kind using the same plate as a matrix. A narrow range of color creates a collection that works individually and in groups.
